Inferring Cloud Feedbacks from ARM Continuous Forcing, ISCCP, and ARSCL Data

چکیده
Single Column Model (SCM) versions of parent general circulation models (GCMs), accompanied by cloud-resolving models (CRMs) that crudely resolve cloud-scale dynamics, have increasingly been used to simulate limited time periods of observations, driven not so much by specific science questions but by the availability of field experiment data or enhanced soundings during Intensive Observation Periods (IOPs). These exercises have provided limited insights about either climate or cloud parameterization, because it usually cannot be determined whether model-data discrepancies are due to inaccurate largescale advective forcing or inaccurate model physics, and in any case the errors revealed may not be climatically representative or indicative of a shortcoming in the model’s cloud feedback prediction

A comparison ofmultiscale variations of decade-long cloud fractions from six different platforms over the Southern Great Plains in the United States
This study compares 1997–2011 observationally based cloud fraction estimates from six different platforms (three ground-based estimates and three satellite-based estimates) over the Southern Great Plains, United States. The comparisons are performed at multiple temporal and spatial scales. The results show that 1997–2011mean cloud fractions from the Active Remote Sensing of CLouds (ARSCL) and f...
متن کاملCritical Evaluation of the ISCCP Simulator Using Ground-Based Remote Sensing Data
Given the known shortcomings in representing clouds in global climate models (GCMs), comparisons with observations are critical. The International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) diagnostic products provide global descriptions of cloud-top pressure and column optical depth that extend over multiple decades. Given the characteristics of the ISCCP product, the model output must be con...
متن کاملComputing and Partitioning Cloud Feedbacks Using Cloud Property Histograms. Part I: Cloud Radiative Kernels
This study proposes a novel technique for computing cloud feedbacks using histograms of cloud fraction as a joint function of cloud-top pressure (CTP) and optical depth (t). These histograms were generated by the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) simulator that was incorporated into doubledCO2 simulations from 11 global climate models in the Cloud Feedback Model Intercom...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE On the Radiative and Dynamical Feedbacks over the Equatorial Pacific Cold Tongue
An analysis of the climatic feedbacks in the NCAR Community Climate Model, version 3 (CCM3) over the equatorial Pacific cold tongue is presented. Using interannual signals in the underlying SST, the radiative and dynamical feedbacks have been calculated using both observations and outputs from the NCAR CCM3. The results show that the positive feedback from the greenhouse effect of water vapor i...
متن کاملA 3-Year Climatology of Cloud and Radiative Properties Derived from GOES-8 Data Over the Southern Great Plains
While the various instruments maintained at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Southern Great Plains (SGP) Central Facility (CF) provide detailed cloud and radiation measurements for a small area, satellite cloud property retrievals provide a means of examining the large-scale properties of the surrounding region over an extended period of time. Seasonal and inter-annual climat...
